SEIKO HIGA

Sensei Seiko Higa was born in Naha, Okinawa. He was a relative of the famous karate master Anko Itosu, who also taought him in his youth. Because his father was a close friend of Kanryo Higaonna he began to learn directly from him. Sensei Miyagi Chojun was already a student of sensei Kanryo Higaonna at the time Sieko Higa joined, he became the training parther of Miyagi Sensei. Over the years he and Sensei Miyagi became quite close.

In the 1920’s he became a primary school teacher but resigned after one year and decided to join the police force. In 1932 he decided to make karate his full time occupation and opened his own dojo with the direct approval of Sensei Miyagi. From 1937 to 1939 he spent 2 years teaching in Saipan. During the war he was beset with the tradgedy of his wifes passing.

During this difficult period he worked at the Okinawan prison to get by and lived with a friend Seikichi Toguchi who, in 1947 helped him open a new dojo in Itoman. Sensei Higa never drank alchohol but he did enjoy a ‘Lucky Strike’ cigarettes and tea. He was a kata specialist and was particularily fond of kata Tansho and Kururunfa.

He passed away at the age of 68.
